MADISON – The city of Madison issued a statement this morning after one of its police officers was found guilty of sexual misconduct Thursday in a bench trial.

“Following the conviction of Kevin Walter, the city of Madison respects the court’s decision,” the statement read. “The city assures our community this is not a reflection of the Madison Police Department and the officers who uphold their public safety Oath of Honor.”

Walter was charged earlier this year after an investigation was conducted by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department involving an incident that happened in October 2022 while Walter was off duty. According to reports, the Madison Police asked the sheriff’s department last November to investigate an allegation where Walter was accused of engaging in intercourse with the victim while she was inebriated.

After the sheriff’s department investigation, it was turned over to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office and presented to a Madison County Grand Jury, which issued a warrant.

Since Walter’s arrest on Feb. 8, he was been on administrative leave with police department.

Samantha Magnuson, communications director for the city, said Walter’s further employment with the police department will be decided after an internal investigation is complete. “As the criminal investigation has been concluded, an administrative investigation is currently being conducted,” she said. “The conclusion of this investigation will determine the appropriate action that will be taken to resolve the matter concerning this employee.”

Walter joined the police department in 2017 after completing training at the police academy in Selma. He was assigned to the patrol division.
