National Space Club honors Emily Albert at von Braun event

MADISON –Emily Albert, who teaches math at Bob Jones High School, has been included in 2021 Teacher Scholarship Winners by the National Space Club of Huntsville.

Albert received her award at this year’s Dr. Wernher von Braun Memorial Dinner.

This scholarship allows a teacher from three different school systems in Madison County to receive an advanced certification in support of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math or STEM. Along with Albert, Felitta Johnson with Huntsville City Schools and Amanda Kennedy-Meeker with Madison County Schools earned the award.

When Albert learned about her honor, she first thought, “Thank you!” and was completely surprised. Someone anonymously nominated Albert for Teacher Scholarship Winners.

At Bob Jones, she teaches geometry with data analysis. She graduated from Alabama A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in secondary mathematics education. Before her assignment at Bob Jones, Albert taught at Discovery Middle School.

“My spouse, Brady Albert, passed away a little over two years ago. I have two daughters: Braylee, six and one/half years old, and Peyton, five years old,” she said.

Held yearly in October, the Dr. Wernher von Braun Memorial Dinner honors selected individuals and groups in various categories related to aerospace and engineering. National Space Club’s funding for educational outreach is the key goal for this ‘can’t miss’ event that attracts 1,000-plus people for a memorable dinner.

Past keynote speakers have included Paul Allen, Microsoft co-founder; retired LTG. Gen. Gary Payton, former astronaut and former U.S. Air Force Deputy Under Secretary; retired Maj. Gen Charles Bolden Jr., former astronaut and NASA administrator; actor Leonard Nimoy; and entertainer Olivia Newton John.

The National Space Club – Huntsville promotes U.S. space leadership with the media of conferences, education and the press. The organization stimulates advancement of civilian and military applications of rocketry and astronautics and related technologies, along with acknowledging individuals and organizations that aid the advancement in the field of study.

In addition, the space club arranges to fund scholarships and lectureships in rocketry and astronautics; a space museum; and activities that stimulate documentation and publication on the history of rocketry and astronautics.
