Expected severe weather today raising concerns for flash floods

MADISON – The US National Weather Service in Huntsville says a dual threat of flash flooding and severe weather will come later this afternoon and evening as a cold front tracks east across the Tennessee Valley after sunset.

Yesterday, the Weather Service said about 3 to 5 inches of rainfall had fallen within a 48 hour period in North Alabama, making the area very prone to additional flooding with the expected rain and storms moving in later today.

Local authorities are urging people to be cautious and watchful for flash flooding. Never drive around barricades and do not drive over a road you cannot see. “It is best to turn around, don’t drown, find a safer way around.”

For the severe storm threat:

Make sure fresh batteries are in weather radio

Tell friends/family about the risk

Check TV/phone for updates through the day

Assemble safety preparedness kit
