Officers involved in deadly shooting acted appropriately says Incident Review Board

MADISON – The City of Madison stated in a press release Monday afternoon that an internal Incident Review Board found the officers involved in a deadly officer-involved shooting last month acted appropriately.
“The Madison Police Department convened an Incident Review Board (IRB) to evaluate officers’ response to resistance involving Dana Fletcher on October 27 in the Planet Fitness parking lot,” the statement read. “The IRB determined that the officers who responded to the incident acted according to department policies and procedures, and it reported its findings to Chief of Police David Jernigan. The Chief returned all officers involved in the incident to full duty with no restrictions.”
The IRB is an advisory body that conducts administrative hearings any time that officers discharge their firearms in the line of duty. It is comprised of voting members including a division commander, a lieutenant, a sergeant, a patrolman and a representative from the District Attorney’s office.
“This review board allows us the ability to critique ourselves with regard to training, equipment, and procedures to ensure we are following policy as established by our agency,” Madison Police Chief David Jernigan said. “The department will continue to ensure that officers receive regular training in accordance with law and departmental policy.”
Because litigation is anticipated, the statement said the City of Madison will have no further comment on this incident at this time and will not publicly release any portion of the investigative file, including body camera video of the incident.
