MADISON – The Triana Heritage Festival and Car Show is scheduled for Oct. 19.

Triana Historical Society is hosting the event, which will open at 10 a.m. in Triana Flamingo Park.

The festival will feature works of pottery, along with arts and crafts merchandise. Visitors can try a game of Bingo and compete for prizes. Children can try a new look with face painting and coloring.

Huntsville City Drummers will entertain with their rousing, fun style of percussion music.

“Mark your calendar, and I hope to see you there,” Triana Mayor Mary Caudle said. “Visitors can attend the preview opening of the Warden’s House and Clinic.”

The Warden’s House and Clinic, sometimes called the Warden’s Residence, was built in 1941 by crews with the Civilian Conservation Corps. The simple structure in stone and gable architecture served as the home for the warden who had the responsibility to oversee Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. (Wikipedia.org)

The refuge warden used the dwelling until 1947. Then in 1950, town leaders moved the local health clinic into the house, and African Americans from the area could receive health care there.

Town leaders and other officials later desegregated the clinic, and the office continued to operate until 1990. Today, the house is the center of a 25-acre park that the Town of Triana operates.

In 2001, the building was listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. In 2010, the structure qualified for a listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The listing includes two auxiliary buildings on approximately one-quarter acre.
