Bob Jones baseball and softball teams playing for state titles this week

Bob Jones baseball and softball teams will be playing for state titles this week.

The Lady Patriots earned a spot in the Class 7A state softball tournament last week. They defeated Huntsville and cross-city rival James Clemens in the regionals at Florence to be the second qualifier from the north region. Sparkman won against Bob Jones and James Clemens to earn the top spot.

The last time Bob Jones competed in the state tournament was 2012.

The Lady Patriots will begin their state tournament action on Thursday at 9 a.m. in Montgomery. Sparkman plays at 10:45 a.m. The tournament will wrap up on Friday with the title game starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Bob Jones baseball team will also be playing for the state title this week. The Patriots earned their second only trip to the state title game in dramatic fashion Saturday. The Class 7A top-ranked Patriots went deep into the 13th inning to pull out the win over Hewitt-Trussville.

“I am really proud of these boys,” Coach Jared Smith said. “They have put in a lot of work to get here.”

The winning play came when Tyler Jones was walked when bases was loaded, bringing in John Riley for the score. The Patriots won 5-4, capping off the second win in the best of three series.

Bob Jones won the first game Friday, 5-3, in eight innings.

The Patriots advance to the Class 7A championship game series in Montgomery. They will face McGill-Toolen on Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18. The first game will be played at Paterson Field at 6 p.m.
