The new Madison baseball team set to play in 2020 will be a farm team for the Los Angeles Angels.

Madison Baseball Down To Five Possible Names

MADISON- The five finalists for the new minor league baseball franchise scheduled to begin play in Madison in 2020 have been revealed after receiving more than 15,000 online ballots by BallCorps, LLC, owner of the Southern League team.

After a top 10 list was released from a first-round of voting, the five finalists chosen are-

Comet Jockeys, Moon Possums, Space Chimps, ThunderSharks and Trash Pandas.

“We are extremely happy with the engagement during the first round of voting for our team name and these top five were the top vote getters and we look forward to hearing from everyone during the final round of voting on the five names,” said Roger Wexelberg, president of the new team.

All team names were nominated by residents of the Tennessee Valley and the final team name will be announced at a public event on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 6:00 p.m. at Rocket Republic Brewing Company located at 289 Production Ave. in Madison.

The nominated names were based on uniqueness and how each name relates to the characteristics of Madison and surrounding communities. According to BallCorps, the team names each have an unrivaled trait that makes each nominated name stand alone.

Comet Jockeys- A celebration of our brave astronauts who explore outer space.

Moon Possums- A scavenger at heart, these local critters are known for hanging around and having a good time.

Space Chimps- A tribute to Miss Baker, one of the first animals launched into space and who is buried on the grounds of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.

ThunderSharks- Mix of the powerful thunder of North Alabama storms with the ultra-strong, sleek determination of the shark willing to attack any problem.

Trash Pandas (slang for raccoon)- No creature is as smart, creative, determined and ingenious a problem solver, much like our community.

A new round of voting for the five finalists and will extend through noon Labor Day, Sept. 3 at NorthAlabmaBaseball.com

“We would love everyone to join us at Rocket Republic Brewery at 6:00 p.m. on Sept. 5 as we unveil the team name,” added Wexelberg.
