Madison captures 19 math trophies

Math students in Madison City Schools earned 19 trophies at the Vestavia Hills Math Tournament on Dec. 10.

More than 1,400 students participated from schools in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida.

“They also brought home numerous certificates for mental math,” Dr. Julie Finley said. Finley is assistant principal at Bob Jones High School. “The students represented Madison City Schools well — both academically and behaviorally.”

In division 2 for sixth grade, 122 students competed. Rainbow Elementary School students swept the top five places. Winning individual awards were Alan Grissom, first place; Aditi Limaye, second; Joe Shen, third; Tony Tian, fourth; Corey Tolbert, fifth; Meenu Bhooshanan, eighth; and Annie Sieja, fifteenth.

Vijitha Kantety from Columbia Elementary School won twelfth place for sixth grade. Rainbow earned first place overall and Horizon Elementary School was in fifth place.

In division 1 for seventh grade, Winston Van from Discovery Middle School won third place among 200 competing students. Discovery was in fourth place overall. From Liberty Middle School, Joey Li took eighth place.

In division 1 for eighth grade, 188 entered the Vestavia Hills competition. Kevin Duan from Liberty earned first place and fellow Liberty student Pratheek Bobba was in thirteenth place. Liberty captured fourth place overall.

For division 1 geometry teams, Sunny Chennupati from Liberty received first-place honors among the 120 competing students. Liberty rated third place in division 1. Jenny Shen from Bob Jones was in fifteenth place.
