Madison students prove math skills in Vestavia
MADISON – Madison secondary students won numerous team and individual awards at the Vestavia Hills High School Math Tournament on Dec. 13.
Kimberly Cox, Bob Jones High School math coach/teacher, said Madison students did “a fantastic job. It was a great day.”
Bob Jones Math Team scored first place in geometry and pre-calculus divisions and placed third in the Interschool Test.
Bob Jones students dominated the Top Ten. In geometry competition, Aditi Limaye placed first; Alan Grissom, second; Marshall Wu, fourth; Warren He, sixth; Tony Tian, seventh; and Shantanu Kadam, tenth.
In pre-calculus, Joey Li earned first-place honors. Winston Van followed in second place. Tina Tian rated seventh place in calculus.
“The geometry team score of 302 was the sum of the top four written tests from Aditi, Alan, Marshall and Warren. The ciphering scores from Aditi, Alan, Tony and Shantanu were over 100 points higher than the second-place team,” Cox said.
“The pre-calculus team scored 286, with work by Joey, Winston, Anthony and Rikesh and ciphering points from Joey, Winston, Anthony and Amelia,” Cox said. “The calculus team of Tina, Kevin, Mathew and Megan placed seventh, falling only 10 points below trophy level.”
Discovery Middle School Math Team won third place among 17 Division 1 schools. David Teng, Juanita Monteiro-Pai, Shreyas Pant and Sherry Lee were high scorers among 164 seventh-graders.
Discovery’s eighth-grade algebra 1 team won third place among 20 schools. “They were four points away from the second-place team and only 16 points away from first place,” Cox said. David Li earned first-place honors, followed by Corey Tolbert in third, Joy Duan and Victoria Lee.
Discovery students competing on the Bob Jones team were Aditi Limaye, first-place trophy, and Tony Tian, seventh-place trophy. Julie Goldston is coach/teacher.
Liberty Middle School’s seventh-grade team placed second among 17 teams. Individual winners were Lawrence Zhang, first; Anshul Moondra, fourth; and Kevin Song, eighth.
Liberty’s eighth-grade team placed sixth among 20 teams. Eric Lee earned fourth place. Billie Wilhelm and Amber Merrill are sponsors.
