Madison grows by nearly 50 percent according to Census data

The city of Madison grew by more than 46 percent, becoming the fastest growing city of the state’s 20 largest cities, as the 2010 Census data was released Thursday.

Madison grew from 30,000 residents in 2000 to nearly 43,000 residents in 2010, placing it as the 10th largest city in the state.

The jump in population accounts for nearly 1/5 of the county’s population, which jumped 21 percent from the year 2000 to a total of 334, 811 in 2010.

Huntsville grew by 22,000 people to push its population to 180,105, which is closing in on the state’s largest three cities: Birmingham (212, 237), Montgomery (205,764) and Mobile (195,111).

Madison County is now the third most populous county being Mobile and Jefferson.
