MADISON – Tammy Jones has accepted the position of assistant principal at Horizon Elementary School.

“Mr. Rodney Richardson, the principal at Horizon, and all the faculty and staff have welcomed me with open arms,” Jones said.

For two years, Jones has worked as an assistant principal at Sparkman Middle School. During 20 years with Madison County Schools, she has taught at Monrovia Elementary School and worked as grant coordinator for teachers’ professional development and as an instructional coach.

“Although I loved my time in middle school, I’m really excited about getting back to an elementary setting,” Jones said. “Elementary is an exciting place to be with so much positive energy.”

In particular, she is enthusiastic about Horizon’s status as a “Leader in Me” school that emphasizes ‘leaders’ emerging from every classroom.

Similar to her work at Sparkman, her job at Horizon will involve curriculum and instruction, along with leadership roles in safety procedures, scheduling and discipline.

Jones always has been in tune with education, considering her mother taught in elementary school for 30 years. “I grew up watching her make a positive difference in the lives of her students, mainly because she believed in them and they knew it,” she said.

Her mother’s “passion for educating her students and her love for teaching inspired me to follow in her footsteps. I knew I wanted to be a teacher from the time I was five years old,” Jones said.

Jones earned a bachelor’s degree at Athens State University and master’s degrees in educational leadership from Samford University and elementary education from Alabama A & M University.

Her husband Kevin is County Administrator for Madison County. Their son Noah, 15, is a sophomore at Westminster Christian Academy.

“I feel blessed to be part of the Horizon family. I look forward to partnering with students, parents and the community to continue the standard of excellence already set forth at Horizon,” Jones said.
