Sam Goodwin likes pro teams with AU alums

MADISON – Sam Goodwin splits his sports time between baseball and football.

In baseball, Sam has participated with the recreation league at Palmer Park for three years. “I was able to go to Southaven, Miss. this summer to participate in the Dizzy Dean World Series with the Madison Elite All-Star Team,” he said.

Sam plays both third base and left field. “However, Sam has had the opportunity to catch in a couple of games and truly enjoys being a catcher,” his mother Kris Goodwin said.

Sam also plays flag football with Upward Sports in Madison. In games, he covers the roles of quarterback and running back. “I love football and wish the flag football season was longer,” Sam said.

If he has to choose, Sam will name football as his favorite sport. “I like it because there is always something going on, and I get to be involved in every play,” he said.

At Horizon Elementary School, Sam is a first-grader and is exploring his options with school clubs and community organizations. He attends First Baptist Church of Huntsville, where participates with Royal Ambassadors and in children’s choir.

Sam’s 11-year-old sister, Madelaine, is a sixth-grader at Horizon Elementary School.

Their parents are Brian and Kris Goodwin. Brian has worked for Adtran for several years and currently serves as Senior Director of Engineering. Kris, a nurse practitioner, works at Crestwood Medical Center, where she is Director of Critical Care and Cardiovascular Services.

Brian moved to Madison in the mid-1990s to begin his engineering career at Adtran. Kris moved to Madison in 2003 from Jackson, Tenn. to be with Brian.

Q & A

Q: What are your favorite restaurants in Madison?

A: He likes Sam and Greg’s Pizzeria, Fulin’s Asian Cuisine and McDonald’s.

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: Sam’s favorites are pizza, sweet and sour chicken, tacos and cheeseburgers.

Q: What are your favorite sports teams?

A: “Auburn Tigers, Carolina Panthers and any professional sports team who has a former Auburn Tiger playing for them,” Sam said.

Q: What is your favorite sports memory?

A: Sam said his best memory about sports is “The Kick Six, 2013 Iron Bowl.”

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: “Sam is always outside playing with neighborhood friends,” Kris said. “They play street hockey, baseball, football and Star Wars. They swim and jump on the trampoline. Sam is a very active six-year-old who loves any kind of sports.”
