Senior Spotlight — Rory Grace Smith

MADISON – Rory Grace Smith is a senior at St John Paul II Catholic High School.

Smith achieved a GPA of 4.5. Smith was a member of National Honor Society and national honor societies for Spanish and Mu Alpha Theta Mathematical and served as co-president in Tri-M Music.

A talented musician, Smith earned the varsity letter in band and superior ratings in grades 9-11 for flute, piccolo, and flute ensemble at District 1 Alabama Bandmaster’s Solo and Ensemble Festival. She was accepted in honor bands at Mississippi State University for marching; Auburn University for marching and concert; and North Alabama Private School for concert.

“My favorite subject was band — participating with my friends in practice and performing music,” Smith said.

In Girls Scouts, she attained the Gold Award, the highest possible honor, after 13 years with the organization. Smith was a member of JPII Concert and Marching Bands for four years, Madison City Community Orchestra for four years, American Rocketry Competition for three years (team captain for two years) and varsity tennis team.

Rory Grace’s parents are retired Lt. Col. Christopher Smith and retired Col. Dr. Monica Gorbandt-Smith. Rory Grace’s sibling is FN1 Winter Smith with the U.S. Coast Guard.

“I will attend either Georgia Tech or Auburn University for a degree in atmospheric science/professional flight. My future career plan is to become a commercial pilot,” Rory Grace said.
