MADISON – Savannah Demeester, a familiar face at Rainbow Elementary School, has accepted the position of Assistant Principal.

“Ms. Demeester is an outstanding educator and was the unanimous choice of the interview committee at Rainbow,” Madison City Schools Superintendent Robby Parker said.

Rainbow Principal Brian Givens described Demeester as an excellent teacher when he was assistant principal at Columbia Elementary School. Demeester’s work at Columbia convinced Givens to hire her as the Madison Aspiring Administrator Program teacher or MAAP at Rainbow when he became principal there.

“As MAAP administrator, I just fell in love with the teachers, staff, parents and students. We all work together to provide the best school environment, care for our students and quality instruction,” Demeester said.

“I was fortunate enough to attend Madison City Schools for K-12 (which) made me keenly of the quality and excellence of MCS,” Demeester said.

At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Demeester earned a bachelor’s degree in early childhood/elementary education and a master’s degree in educational leadership.

Eight years ago, Demeester started her career in education at Harvest Elementary School with Madison County Schools. She then transferred to MCS to teach fifth-graders at Columbia Elementary School. “This past year, I served as the MAAP educator at Rainbow. I’ve also coached volleyball for six years at Bob Jones High School,” she said.

As Rainbow assistant principal, Demeester will focus on “effective instruction, encouraging and enforcing our attendance policy, partnering and meeting with parents, coaching our staff, working with our PTA and loving our kids.” 

Demeester’s most influential teacher was her mother, Suzanne Katschke. “She taught in MCS for 10 years and was my eighth-grade English teacher. (My mother) was such an effective and wonderful teacher; I still remember and use many tools she taught us.”

“(My mother) also loved being an educator and made learning fun,” Demeester said. “Most importantly, she truly loved and cared for all of her students as if they were her own.”

Savannah’s husband Kyle works as Finance Manager for the City of Decatur. Their daughter Ava Grace is two years old, and son Hudson is three months old.

“I enjoy playing beach volleyball, spending time with my family and watching the Green Bay Packers win,” Savannah said.

Demeester fills the slot left by Demetria Freeman, who transferred to Madison Elementary to work as assistant principal.
