YMCA can help resolutions become reality

HUNTSVILLE, MADISON – Resolutions claim all the attention around New Year’s Day but Heart of the Valley YMCA suggests that individuals can resolve any day of the year to gain better health and wellbeing.

“After busy holidays filled with celebrations and tables of delicious treats, it’s not surprising that, according to a 2019 survey published by inc.com, 65 percent of people resolve to exercise more with the New Year,” Mary Anne Swanstrom said. Swanstrom is Director of Communications with Heart of the Valley YMCA.

“When you join the Y, a community-based organization with a mission, you’re committing to more than just becoming healthier — you’re also supporting programs that strengthen the place where you live,” Swanstrom said.

“Community-based organizations like the Y provide the resources and opportunities that people need to reach their full potential. Supporting those organizations through membership and philanthropy helps ensure they can continue to help build the kinds of communities we all want to live in,” Jerry Courtney said. Courtney is Heart of the Valley YMCA President/CEO.

Local YMCA programs include chronic disease prevention, school readiness and youth development programs. Heart of the Valley YMCA continues to grow its signature “Health Initiatives” array of programs with the addition of blood pressure self-monitoring to its diabetes prevention program.

“EnhanceFitness” classes help people who are mobility-challenged. Cancer survivors and patients can enroll in the “Fit to Fight” exercise program.

Heart of the Valley YMCA, including Hogan Family YMCA in Madison, offers these tips for rethinking a 2020 plan for success:

* Start small. Break those big resolutions into small, achievable goals.

* Take it one step at a time. Make lifestyle changes in increments.

* Keep the faith. Don’t be discouraged by setbacks.

* Attitude is very important. Focus on a resolution’s benefits instead of what you’re missing.

* Talk it out. Find a friend who can offer accountability and encouragement.

Through Jan. 31, Heart of the Valley YMCA is offering 25 percent off membership for 2020. Also, members do not have to pay join fees. The Y offers young adult membership for 19- to 29-year-olds.
