Cats for adoption and entertainment fill Caturday

MADISON – What is the result of filling a Saturday full of friendly felines and fun activities? It’s “Caturday” at Madison Public Library.

After its introduction last year, ‘Caturday’ is returning to the library for a cat-themed, all-day event on Dec. 7. Madison Animal Rescue Foundation or MARF will bring cats to the library for adoption.

“Years ago, a cat-loving librarian hosted a cat adoption event at our old location. When I took her place, I decided to expand on the idea, and Caturday was born,” Youth Services Librarian Lisa Blackmon said.

At 10:30 a.m., Blackmon will tie in literacy with a cat-themed storytime in the auditorium with books, finger-plays and music including “Soft Kitty.”

“From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., we will have cat cuddles and adoptions with MARF,” Blackmon said. “I’ve been working with Dina DeMarco from Madison-based MARF to again find forever homes for some special cats.”

With a few restrictions, people can adopt on the spot. MARF encourages everyone who wants to adopt to complete an online application before Caturday at madisonarf.org. “Years ago, I adopted a rescue cat, so I know what joy they can bring,” Blackmon said.

In the makerspace area, guests will experience the construction of a cat castle workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. The makerspace librarian will assist six-year-olds and older to use cardboard and other materials to create a take-home spot for their pet (online reservations requested).

Cheri Cox from Therapy Partners Inc. will bring Chico, the therapy cat, to visit from 3 to 4 p.m. “People of all ages have loved learning about how animals like Chico can be a therapeutic tool in our community. Plus, what could be cooler than hanging out at the library with a cat in a stroller?” she said.

Throughout the day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., youth and other guests can enjoy crafts, movies including “Aristocrats” and nonfiction cat videos and informational displays. Youngsters will make cat ears and color famous cats.

“Of course, we’ll also have a variety of materials — fiction and nonfiction, books and DVDs available for checkout,” Blackmon said.

“Note the library is here for all patrons, so we hosted Dog Days this past summer for our canine lovers,” Blackmon said.
