MADISON – Discovery Middle School students Jarod Harris and Angela Kinley earned top honors in the Junior Solar Sprint contest.

Sci-Quest Hand-on Science Center hosted this regional tournament. Among all teams competing, Harris ranked in first place. Kinley placed third.

Other Discovery students in the competition on May 9 were Malachi Battle, Corbin Fawcett and Brian Fritz.

The Army Educational Outreach Program sponsors the event for hands-on experience for students in grades 5-8 to apply Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) concepts.

This year, ARMDEC provided the solar panel and motor for the cars. Students had to research, design, make drawings and build a model from their designs.

Harris will advance to the national competition in Dallas.
