State, national American Legion officials commend Madison post

MADISON – Members of American Legion, Post 229 hosted a delegation of the veteran organization’s national- and state-level officers on Feb. 18.

The Legionnaires gathered for a luncheon that included an awards ceremony. Representatives from American Legion included the National Vice Commander David King, Alabama National Executive Committee, Department of Alabama Commander, three Division Commanders and several officers from the Auxiliary.

In addition to the American Legion delegation, representatives attended from state, county and local leadership positions and Kent Davis, the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner. State and local government officials in attendance included State Sen. Arthur Orr, State Sen. Tom Butler, State Rep. Mike Ball and Madison City Councilwoman Karen Denzine.

Members of American Legion, Post 229 Honor Guard received certificates of appreciation for their service to veterans and their families. During the past year, the Honor Guard has performed more than 80 graveside services. Honor Guard members at the ceremony included Jean Downs, Robert Kirby, John Hutchins, Danny Marr and Larry Frakes.

“The National Vice Commander spoke to the audience about the impact and importance of the American Legion in our community and at the state and national levels, highlighting more than 100 years of accomplishments of our country’s oldest and largest veterans’ organization,” Jean Downs said. Downs is President of Madison American Legion Auxiliary.

“The commander also praised the work of Post 229 for their work in our community supporting our veterans, engaging our youth and perpetuating Americanism,” Downs said.

“It was an honor to host the national and state delegation from the American Legion,” Madison Post 229 Commander Larry Vannoy said. “It was very gratifying to share the work that our post members do in our community with leadership from across so many organizations.”
