Patriots, Jets and Panthers excel in national math contests

MADISON – Math Club members at Bob Jones and James Clemens high schools recently ranked nationally in the Four-by-Four Competition. These students have perpetuated a winning streak throughout the 2017-2018 school year.

Bob Jones placed fifth in the nation in National Assessment & Testing’s Four-by-Four Competition.

“Our team score came from our top three teams of four. Our official team members were Justin Byers, Alan Grissom, Kate Han, Shantanu Kadam, David Li, Aditi Limaye, Tony Tian, Corey Tolbert, Isaac Wang, James Yoo, John Yoo and Cheng Zhou,” Math Club sponsor Kimberly Cox said.

James Clemens High School was close by earning tenth place in the Four-by-Four. Participating students were Lawrence Zhang, Kevin Zheng, Kevin Song, Adrian Lai, Sumedha Bobba, Rohan Sethi, Neil Chaudhary, Rishi Bathina, Eric Lee, Matthew Hemken, Aditya Singhal, Mary Vaughan, Dylan Kridner, Rajesh Patel, Needhi Badhe, Sharath Narayan, Zhuo Chen, Olivia Fox, Shrishti Dubey, Sophia Fox and Melodie Zhu.

The National Assessment & Testing company administers high quality, affordable mathematics competitions for math teams and honor societies. “Our contests cover a wide range of topics, difficulties and formats to provide both confidence and challenges to students of all abilities,” Tom Clymer said. Clymer is Director of National Assessment’s Academic Competitions.

In the top ten, schools and academies from New Jersey, California, Washington and Florida ranked in places 1-4, respectively. NJ. Bob Jones took fifth place. James Clemens ranked in tenth place, with the only other home-state contender, Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, at ninth place.

In addition, two teams from Discovery Middle School earned top places in their division in a special contest. Discovery seventh-graders Justin Pan and Ashwin Prabhakar and eighth-graders Mike Zhang and Maanasi Limaye claimed first place. Discovery seventh-graders Julia Nguyen, Constance Wang, Neha Chopade and Puja Chopade rated third.

During 2017-2018, Bob Jones Math Team has received other National Team Awards in Fall Start-up Event, 11th place; Team Scramble, tenth; and Ciphering Time Trials, 13th.

Bob Jones earned first place in State Team Awards at the University of Alabama, Calhoun Community College and Grissom High School. Bob Jones ranked third in Grissom High School’s tourney.
