MADISON – Columbia Elementary School in Madison will provide the venue for the Rocket City Buddy Walk, a major fundraiser for supporting individuals with Down syndrome.

The buddy walk will benefit Bringing Up Down Syndrome or BUDS, which is North Alabama’s leading 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

“BUDS is proud to host and invite the public to the Rocket City Buddy Walk,” BUDS Co-President Caneilia Patterson said. “This official event of the National Down Syndrome Society’s Buddy Walk series is a heartwarming celebration that unites families from across North Alabama.”

Participants will gather at Columbia, 667 Balch Road in Madison on Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Admission is free. BUDS encourages the public to attend.

“The Rocket City Buddy Walk is more than just a walk; it’s a joyful family reunion filled with fun activities, delicious food and a symbolic walk to honor and celebrate our loved ones in the community with Down syndrome,” Patterson said.

The fun activities will include a kids’ train, bounce houses, face painting, balloon artist, foam party, large auction and more. For lunch, Domino’s pizza, Coke products, A Little Something Extra Ice Cream Truck, popcorn and cotton candy will be free to attendees.

Hippea Camper, along with Waffles & Coffee with Hope, will sell their food-stand treats.

“As our main fundraiser of the year, your participation and donations will directly support BUDS’ efforts,” Patterson said. “BUDS’ mission is to support North Alabama individuals, of all ages, with Down syndrome and their families.”

“We strive to provide education, encouragement, personal experience and financial assistance through new parent resources, family and age-group events and grants. Within our community, we are fully committed to shine light on Down syndrome awareness to promote acceptance and inclusion for all ages,” Patterson said.

To help, residents can enter the Rocket City Buddy Walk “and enjoy a day of celebration and community. Your generous contributions help us continue our mission and expand our programs,” Patterson said. In addition, word-of-mouth sharing will promote the event.
