MADISON – On Sept. 24, chorus students at Bob Jones High School will present a longtime tradition, the “Coffee & Cake Concert.”

The concert begins at 7 p.m. in Zompa Auditorium with a dessert reception following the program.

“Although the newly refurbished auditorium is already being used for instruction and student events, the Coffee & Cake concert will be the first performance for the public in the renovated space,” Bob Jones Chorus Director Randall Fields said.

“Audience members will realize new, more comfortable seating and new LED stage lighting,” Fields said.

Student vocalists will perform various musical styles from Renaissance to rock. The concert will feature premiere performances of the 2015-2016 Mixed Chorus and Patriot Singers. Smaller ensembles and soloists will perform music they have prepared in addition to regular class assignments.

“Our special guests, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble from the University of North Alabama, will perform,” Fields said. This ensemble perpetuates the American idiom of jazz, pop and world music. These vocalists usually sing a cappella or with limited percussion.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble performs on and off campus and tours with Collegiate Singers in spring. These students have been featured at W. C. Handy Festival in Florence and Panoply Festival of the Arts in Huntsville. (una.edu/music/vocal-jazz-ensemble.html)

“A highlight of our year will be the chorus trip to New York City in April 2016. Because of our award-winning performances at National Choral Festival last year, we have been invited to perform in Carnegie Hall,” Fields said.

“While in New York, students will work with an internationally recognized conductor, explore the city and attend a Broadway musical,” Fields said.

The scrumptious array of treats after the concert will include various desserts, hors d’oeuvres and beverages.

Tickets are $10 and available from chorus members and booster parents, at Bob Jones’ main office and at the event. Ticket proceeds will apply to chorus instructional expenses.
