Allen’s nursing care gains ‘Staff Member of the Year’ honor at West Madison

MADISON – Her medical knowledge and concern for students and faculty led to Aimee Allen’s selection as “2021 Staff Member of the Year” at West Madison Elementary School.

“It’s nice whenever I am out and about in the community and a former parent or student recognizes me and lets me know how much I helped them . . . or was just simply nice,” Allen said.

“I am the nurse for the students, as well as the entire faculty and staff. I give daily meds to those students who take them and, as needed, meds,” Allen said.

Her duties as school nurse also require her to complete a weekly medication count with another nurse to ensure all supplies are accurate for medication logs. “I am here for any minor injuries, as well as big ones,” Allen said.

Allen is a native of Flat Rock. “I graduated from Pisgah High School in 1995. I later attended Northeast Alabama Community College, where I received an associate’s degree in applied science in nursing,” Allen said.

Directly after graduation from nursing school, AlIen worked on the respiratory care unit of a hospital. She later transferred to the emergency room before leaving that work to accept a position with Madison City Schools.

“I started working for MCS in August of 2007,” Allen said. “I have been at West Madison Elementary School for the entire time. This fall 2021, I will relocate to Midtown Elementary School.”

With the end of the 2020-2021 school year, the West Madison facility will no longer function as an elementary school. The site will become the home of MCS’ First Class Pre-Kindergarten Center.

“I have three wonderful children. My daughter Anna-Grace just graduated from Bob Jones High School. Jacob and Noah are also students at Bob Jones,” Allen said.

Recently, Aimee enjoyed witnessing Anna-Grace return to West Madison, when she and classmates in Bob Jones Class of 2021 returned to their former elementary school to complete their ‘senior walk.’ That experience was especially meaningful to the Allens because this year was the last time that West Madison will serve as an elementary school.

In her spare time, Aimee likes to work out for exercise and redo furniture for an updated look.
