HUNTSVILLE – Through Nov. 15, nonprofit organizations can submit a grant proposal to the Jane R. Parks Memorial Fund.

In 2012, the Parks family and Master Gardeners of North Alabama established the grant by mutual agreement in memory of Jane R. Parks, who was a passionate educator for 30 years and a gardener for most of her life.

Parks became a master gardener in 2003, publicist Sue Khoury said.

The nonprofit organizations that apply must support projects in educational horticulture in Madison County and have no political affiliations. Awards are granted to existing projects that promote community involvement in horticulture.

Previous recipients of Park grants include Deep Roots of Alabama, James Clemens High School in Madison, Seminole Boys and Girls Club, Madison Public Library Children’s Garden and CASA of Madison County.

Grant awards range from $100 to $1,000.

Master Gardeners of North Alabama is a nonprofit organization of certified master gardeners committed to community education of horticulture in the greater Huntsville/Madison area. Alabama Cooperative Extension System oversees the Alabama Master Gardener Program.

Throughout the year, the master gardeners organization sponsors free workshops in Madison at Dublin Park and around Madison County. Past topics have covered specific plants like roses and hostas, herb gardening, landscape planning, growing vegetables and planting with color in mind for a shady lawn.
