MADISON – Having stellar resumes, Joshua Abreo and Sunny Chennupati are the 2015 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, at James Clemens High School.

Abreo, 17, is a lifelong Madison resident. “My parents originally immigrated to the United States from India for higher education studies,” he said.

With a GPA of 5.14, Abreo scored 2370 on his SAT. He achieved a ‘perfect’ score of 36 on the ACT. He is a National Merit Semifinalist.

A frequent science standout, Abreo was finalist and special award winner with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair; finalist, National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium; semifinalist, Intel Science Talent Search; semifinalist, Siemens Competition for Math, Science and Technology; and first-place winner, Alabama State Science and Engineering Fair.

Among his club affiliations, Abreo served as captain of Quiz Bowl and National Honor Society member. “I volunteer in Crestwood ICU and was a member of the James Clemens Cross Country Team,” Abreo said.

His parents are Dennis and Felicia Abreo.

“I will be attending Vanderbilt University as a Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholar. I’ll will be double-majoring in chemical engineering and economics,” Josh said. Undecided about graduate plans, he is considering medical school.

Chennupati, 18, has lived in Madison since 1998. “My family moved (from India) to advance my education opportunities and for my dad’s corporation,” Chennupati said.

With a GPA at 5.12, Chennupati scored 36 on ACT and 2360 on SAT.

Chennupati’s achievements include National Advanced-Placement (AP) Scholar, National Merit Finalist, Presidential Scholar candidate and Mayor’s Award for Scholastic Excellence in Mathematics.

Chennupati ranked second and fourth places, respectively, in state-level science and scholars bowls. He achieved the American Mathematics Competitions Honor Roll.

Chennupati was state third-place winner with Alabama Council for Technology in Education and won several events in state Science Olympiad. He scored first in National Assessment and Testing Ciphering.

He was captain of the math and Science Bowl teams; co-captain of Scholars Bowl; and Science Olympiad team member. His parents are Rama and Jayanthi Chennupati.

Sunny will study neuroscience at Vanderbilt University and plans a career in medicine, possibly as a surgeon.
