MADISON – The Liberty Middle School Math Team was prepared for the task at the regional MATHCOUNTS Competition Series and ranked in second place among the contestants.

By placing second, Liberty qualified to advance to state competition on March 14. “I’m very proud of how well Liberty’s math team students have done this year,” seventh-grade math teacher and coach Billie Wilhelm said.

All 10 students in the Huntsville chapter qualifying for the state competition are Madison students at Liberty and Discovery middle schools.

Liberty students were required to compete at the school level to advance to MATHCOUNTS. “The top 10 students in seventh and eighth grade were able to compete,” Wilhelm said.

Liberty Math Team members for MATHCOUNTS were eighth-grader Eric Lee and seventh-graders Anshul Moondra, Lawrence Zhang and Kevin Zheng.

Individually, Lawrence Zhang placed fourth and Eric Lee took eighth place. Other students competing individually for MATHCOUNTS were seventh-graders Sumedha Bobba, Zhuo Chen, Rishi Jangale, Vishay Ram, Rohan Sethi and Kevin Song.

Eighth-graders on the Algebra 1 Team were Nathan Assaf, Raveena Baskaran, Christopher Day, Sarah Han, Matthew Hemken, Rishi Jangale, Joseph Jiang, Eric Lee, Hailey Long, Neha Mokashi, Ethan O’Quin, Aneri Patel, Sarah Paul, Alondra Rosello, Mary Vaughan and Christina Zarazua.
