It’s that time of year when we all consider our New Year’s resolutions and some of us even act on them.

I have always been one who has the best intentions each year, but zero follow through, until now.

I am committed to losing weight. It is long overdue.

I am soon to turn 40 years old and I am at least 40 pounds overweight.

I have a 5-year-old daughter who I plan to walk down the aisle one day, but not anytime soon.

I started this weight loss journey in November by signing up at Iron Tribe Fitness in Madison. Scott Alsabrook, manager of Iron Tribe Madison, and Miranda Brown, Iron Tribe Madison trainer, have put much of their energy in helping me achieve my goal.

Miranda is a former U.S. Marine drill sergeant so she is very well equipped at getting the job done. These classes also include nutrition and diet education, which I have found to play a key role in losing weight.

Another wonderful option available to my family and me is our membership at the Hogan Family YMCA in Madison.

This facility is one of the most impressive YMCAs in the state. My daughter and I love the new outdoor pool and splash pad.

The Hogan YMCA offers great recreational opportunities for the entire family. My daughter took advantage of their soccer program last spring.

Also, I have found most neighborhoods in Madison offer sidewalks for walking and running. I have been taking advantage of that benefit in my own neighborhood.

Madison also offers beautiful greenways for biking, running, and walking.

I have lost 10 pounds through November and December. I am very proud of this start considering the bombardment of holiday goodies.

It’s been so nice to discover the many resources Madison offers for those who want to get in shape.

The only thing that has been stopping me from taking advantage of these opportunities has been the initiative.

No more excuses from this guy.
