MADISON – Two police officers from the Madison Police Department are on paid administrative leave after an incident last night involving an estranged husband’s suicide, Capt. John Stringer of MPD confirmed.

Madison Police responded to a call the night of Jan. 27 in a neighborhood just off of County Line Road, Hunington Chase Drive, which ended in the apparent suicide of an estranged husband of the caller. The husband, whose name has not been released, led police on a short chase that ended in the same neighborhood after he was spotted driving in his vehicle.

Shots were returned by Madison Police after the husband fired an initial shot, Stringer said, that appeared to be the fatal, self-inflicted blow.

“Domestics are volatile situations because you have people who have been involved emotionally,” he said. “We do respond to all allegations of domestic violence and domestic disputes.”

Stringer said the subsequent investigation of the incident, which is in its “early stages,” will be handled by Sgt. Brian Chaffin of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. Chaffin has not been reached for comment as of 4 p.m. on Jan. 28.
