Madison Recreation wraps up another exciting season
10U Boys- Heat won the West Division Championship and posted an undefeated season with its 34-21 title game victory over the Bucks. The Heat were coached by Weaver.
12U Boys- By defeating the Warriors 51-32 to earn the 12U championship trophy, the Rockets, coached by Ceci/Ceci, posted a perfect, undefeated season.
MADISON – The recent 2024-2025 youth basketball season is now history with the just completed post-season tournaments the climax to another exciting season hosted by the Madison Recreation Dept. Made up of 64 teams spread out among both boys and girls, the youth leagues played its seasons at several of the local school gymnasiums with the coordination of the Madison City Schools. Home base was Dublin Memorial Park.
The tournament championship games were each played at Dublin with season- ending action completed with three undefeated teams: 8U boys Bucks, 10U boys Heat and 12U boys Rockets. Within the post-season competition, three No. 1 seeds were upset from the top ranks. Those included the 10U girls top-seeded Liberty upset by the 5-5 Dream; 13U girls No. 1 seed Sparks were knocked out of their championship hunt by the No. 2 seed Sky; 14U boys the No. 2 seed Hawks upset the top seeded Kings by 20 points.
Here’s the look at the title games in each of the age divisions: 18U boys- The Sixers (9-1) opened a fivepoint lead at halftime then exploded to outscore the Warriors 37-25 in the second half. With a 64-49 final score, the Sixers, coached by Brazeal, won the title over the Warriors coached by Bostick/Robinson.
Reece Brazeal was tops in scoring with 22 points followed by Gyan Bhagat 11 and Mason Rinehart and Nicholas Koukos 10 points each for the Sixers. For the Warriors (7-3), Jonah Brooks scored a gamehigh 24 with Lane Baker adding eight points.
14U boys- The second seeded Hawks (Wiggins/Wiggins) rallied from a fivepoint deficit after two quarters to crush the No. 1 seed Kings (Schmauch/Sansom) by 20 points 63-43.
Quinn Barnes, the league’s top season scorer with 224 points, was held scoreless in the second quarter, but used the three remaining periods to totally take control of the game as he hit six three-point shots and finished with a game-high 29 points to lead the winning Hawks (8-2). Frank Jimenez added 15. The Kings (9-1) scored just 18 points in the second half but were led by Andrew Schmauch’s 15 points while Luke Barrow scored 11 and Isaac DeSpain 10.
One additional facet of the season for Barnes is his 224 points was 90 points more than runner-up Jackson Thoron of the Thunder (134 points).
12U boys- An undefeated season was in order for the Rockets (10-0) with the 51-32 victory over the Warriors (8-2) in the title game. The top two seeded teams opened the game as the Rockets, coached by Ceci/Ceci, outscored the Warriors 13-2 in the first quarter and led by 31-11 by halftime. The Warriors were coached by Guo/Osterc.
Carter Holcombe topped all scorers with 30 points of his own to lead the Rockets. Gavin Barnes added nine. Leading scorers for the Warriors were led by brothers Luke Buse (9 points) and Connor Buse (7 points).
10U boys- West Division- The Heat not only won the West Division Championship of the age group by beating the Bucks 34-21, the squad, coached by Weaver, also posted an undefeated 10-0 season. Against the Bucks (Coach Warren), B. Weaver was tops in scoring with 15 and N. Shumate added 9.
The Bucks’ (9-1) top scorers were R. Robinson (7) and A. Wyatt (5).
East Division- The Rockets (7-3) outscored the Warriors (6-4) 8-4 in the fourth quarter including six points from the free throw line to post the 25-20 title victory.
D. Miller was tops for the Rockets with 10 points including hitting 4 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter alone. B. Vinson added nine. Only three players scored for the runner-up Warriors; A. Brooks was tops with eight while both M. Murray and G. Rosa added six each.
Thaxton coached the Rockets. Brooks/ Bostick coached the Warriors.
8U boys- Outscoring the Hawks by seven in the second half, the Bucks completed a perfect season with a 10-pont 31-21 victory. Kingston Montgomery led the way for the 10-0 Bucks with 17 points. The Bucks were coached by Bartee/Turner.
The Hawks, a No. 3 seed at 7-3, were coached by Jordan and were a one-player team in the title game as Kollin Baez totaled all his team’s 21 points.
7U boys- The top two seeds made it to the finals with the No. 1 seed Sixers (9-1) scoring an 18-15 victory over the Wildcats (8-2). Neither team scored in the second quarter with the remainder of the contest a battle to the finish.
H. Daily scored all his six points in the fourth quarter to pull the Sixers to the win. J. Batchelor led the team with eight points. Eight was also the name of the game in points for E. Ward who led the Wildcats.
The Wildcats were coached by Serpa/ Bolton. The Sixers were led by Hambrick/ Wright.
13U girls- Trailing headed into the fourth quarter, the No. 2 seed Sky outscored the top-seeded Sparks (9-2) 5-1 in the final stanza to wrap up the championship with a hard fought 15-12 win.
Coached by Hambrick/Polite, the Sky (7-4) was led in scoring by Haley Morris (9 points) and both Brylee Harris and Avery Langston with three points each. The Sparks, coached by Burks/Harrison, saw Cora Fleischmann score six with Molly McMahan score five.
10U girls- The third seed 5-5 Dream pulled off the upset of the tournament with a 24-22 win over the No. 1 seed Liberty (9-1). Kaydee Jo Glaze poured in 10 points and Grace Vaughn nine to assist the LeCroy/Yost coached team to victory. Led by Coach Kimberly, the Liberty gave a gallant effort and were led in scoring by Caroline Starnes’ game-high 12 points and Mary Grace Kimberly’s six.
8U girls- The 9-1 Sun held its top seed position high with pride with its 15-7 defeat of second seed Sky (7-3). The Sun outscored their opponent by 7-4 in the second half to preserve the title trophy victory.
Top scorers for the Sun (Coach Rucker) were Ahlani Rucker (6) and Molly Wathen (4). The Sky (Coach Mikelson) had three players score to total its seven points. Those to tally on the scoresheet were Kennedy Coffee (3) and Madison White (2) and Summer Mikelson (2).
Overall, there were more than 600 players assigned within the play of the 64 teams with the 10-under boys division being the largest age group with 125 players involved among the 15 teams.
