MPD: Police arrest student at Liberty Middle School after discovering loaded 9mm handgun
MADISON – Madison Police said Thursday afternoon that a teenage male has been arrested after being discovered at school with a loaded handgun.
According to MPD, the discovery began the night before when officers received a call about a 13-year-old boy carrying a pistol at a local apartment complex. Officers were not able to find a firearm with the boy at that time but alerted the school resource officer (SRO) at Liberty Middle School, where the child attends school.
Thursday morning, SROs made contact with the student and conducted a search by officers and school staff. A loaded 9mm handgun was located on him and taken as evidence.
The student, whose name is being withheld due to his age, was charged with Certain Persons Forbidden to Possess a Firearm, which is a felony under Alabama Law. He was taken to the Neaves-Davis Juvenile Detention Center.
An investigation is still ongoing into the incident.
A notice was sent to parents of Liberty students stating that a student was found in possession of a handgun after lunch on Thursday. “When notified of the potential weapon on campus, the administration along with the SRO immediately found the student, isolated the student and retrieved the weapon.
“Please know that the safety and security of our students and staff are our top priorities. We have strict measures in place for students like these, and we are committed to providing a safe learning environment for everyone.”
The statement from the Madison School District said the school district’s safety and security coordinator, Jamie Golliver, along with the Madison Police will review the situation.
