Sparkman rallies in fourth quarter, but unable to overcome blocked field goal in overtime
DECATUR – Sparkman caused Austin to surrender a 14-point fourth-quarter lead but the Black Bears rallied in overtime to beat the Class 7A, Region 4 rival 31-30 on Friday.
Trailing 30-23 in overtime, JL Davis threw a touchdown pass to Jaxon Potter. Hayden Wynn’s extra point clinched the win for Austin (3-0, 1-0).
The Black Bears led 24-10 with 9:52 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Sparkman Senators responded with a 1-yard run by Williams with 2:24 left in regulation and a Williams to Zayden Bodner 24-yard pass with nine seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.
Williams scored on a 1-yard run to put the Senators ahead 30-23 in overtime, but Austin blocked the extra point to set up the Black Bears’ winning points.
