Rotary clubs organize for civic outreach to Madison

MADISON – Madison is fortunate to have two additional Rotary clubs to engage in projects to benefit the people of Madison, along with a broader perspective to regional and global outreach.

A Rotary Club’s mission is “to provide service to others, promote integrity and advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through our fellowship of business, professional and community leaders.” (rocketcountyrotary.org)

Rotary Club of Rocket County conducts two meetings each month — on first and third Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at Old Black Bear Brewing Company, 212 Main St. in downtown Madison.

The club has scheduled evening meetings to accommodate busy schedules. One monthly meeting is devoted to business matters, while the other one involves a social or service event.

One of their service projects involving lots of ‘sweat equity’ was the installation of signage and six structures for fitness stations at Dublin Park. This commitment involved stations for pull-ups, back extensions, balance beam, dip bars, sit-ups and jump box. Club members braved the heat to dig, install, hammer and build the exercise sites.

Their upcoming project on Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon will benefit Sleep in Heavenly Peace, an organization that gives a bed to a child who does not have one. Rotarians will join volunteers from Sleep in Heavenly Peace to build beds at the SHP Warehouse, 6000 Technology Drive in Huntsville.

For another new club, charter members were thrilled to announce the launch of “Rotary Club of MadCity.” The club will meet on first and third Fridays at noon at Madison Hospital.

Residents saw the need for a new club that could accommodate the busy schedules of community members. With a morning, noon and night option, members hope to simplify getting involved and making a difference in the community through Rotary, according to a club release.

Club members extend an open invitation for residents to attend a meeting. Whether a long-time member or new to Rotary, visitors can discover more about the club’s mission and ways to get involved with the group.

The president of Rotary Club of MadCity is Dr. Ed Nichols, Superintendent of Madison City Schools.

Currently, these Rotarians are mapping out some service projects and networking with several organizations in North Alabama that need assistance and support.

At their Aug. 16 meeting, members of Rotary Club of MadCity were honored by a visit from Mary Grace Evans, past District Governor of Rotary, as guest speaker. Evans shared her insights about the impact of Rotary’s work and ways that club members can effectively assist their community.

Also at that meeting, Rotary Club of MadCity received its club charter from Evans. This moment marked a significant milestone for the club and symbolized the members’ success in founding the new organization.
