HEALS mobile clinic schedules weekly visits to Madison schools

MADISON – The mobile clinic with Health Establishments at Local School Inc. or HEALS has defined a weekly schedule to visit students in Madison City Schools.

“Madison City Schools is excited to partner with HEALS Inc. to offer a mobile clinic for students who do not have private medical and/or dental insurance,” MCS Public Relations Manager John Peck said.

HEALS provides medical services for well-child physicals, minor injuries and illnesses, diabetes, asthma management, lab work and immunizations, along with management of chronic illnesses. Students can receive dental services for bi-annual routine cleanings, sealants, X-rays, mouth guards, fluoride treatment and silver diamine fluoride or SDF for cavity prevention, along with referrals to specialists.

On every Thursday and Friday, the HEALS mobile clinic visits Midtown, Horizon and Mill Creek elementary schools and Bob Jones High School. A student must schedule an appointment to see a HEALS healthcare employee or doctor, as needed.

Any MCS student that qualifies can receive treatments in the mobile clinic. HEALS officials also welcome a student’s siblings who are at home.

“Good health is a key to success for students. For families who don’t have private health and/or dental insurance, that can be a financial challenge,” Peck said.

A school nurse, teacher or staff member can refer a student to HEALS. Parents also can request healthcare services for their child in three ways:

* Online — Complete the HEALS application on the MCS website at madisoncity.k12.al.us/Page/8868.

* By phone – Call the clinical coordinator at 256-428-7560 or 256-808-9123.

* By email – Email healsinc@healsinc.org.

By using one of these preceding contact methods, parents still can arrange for health services if their child attends a MCS school that is not on the regular stop list. A student must have prior permission from a parent/guardian to see a HEALS employee.

HEALS provides medical and dental care in school for infants through 19-year-olds. HEALS cannot accept private insurance.

In addition, the HEALS mobile clinic travels to other schools during the academic year in rural parts of Madison County and lower-income neighborhoods.

Community partners who helped to fund the mobile clinic include Frank and Colleen Williams, Madison County Commission, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments or TARCOG.

For more information, call 256-428-7560 or 256-808-9123, email healsinc@healsinc.org or visit healsinc.org.
