Patriots take down rival Senators 31-13 in front of home crowd

MADISON — The Bob Jones Patriots (4-3) dominated their old foe Sparkman (5-2) on Friday at home 31-13.

The Senators were doomed by four turnovers that stifled repeated attempts to truly contend in the game.

Led by senior Tyren Washington, the Bob Jones running backs combined to score four rushing touchdowns to pull away from Sparkman on a cool, windy night at Madison City Stadium.

The rain came down in a light drizzle as the teams battled in mid-October for yearly bragging rights.

This rivalry has much more age to it compared to the more recent engagement of James Clemens-Bob Jones that has generated a lot of heat.

Red, White and Blue versus Black and Cardinal is still timeless for those from the area who grew up going to the schools.

The game started with instant trouble for the Senators who coughed the pigskin up when Sparkman running back Jay’quel Coleman’s fumble was recovered by Bob Jones defender Calvin Senwo.

In a contest bombarded with penalties, Bob Jones was able to weed through the delays to score a 1-yard touchdown run when Washington burrowed his way through the pile to make it 6-0 Patriots with 4:10 remaining in the opening quarter.

AJ Mitchell’s interception of Sparkman quarterback Josh Ward placed Bob Jones on the Senator 17 yard line with a golden opportunity to strike once more.

A 6-yard touchdown carry by Washington pushed the Patriot advantage to 12-0 late in the first quarter.
