Madison Area Lions Club donates supplies to school nurses

MADISON – Members of Madison Area Lions Club visited four campuses to present donations of supplies and cash to school nurses.

School nurses at Sparkman High School, Monrovia Middle School, Legacy Elementary School and Monrovia Elementary School each received $100 as a cash donation and a box of household supplies for cleaning and sanitizing spaces, especially in their sick rooms.

“This effort was part of a service project we held at the Neighborhood Walmart on Wall Triana,” Lions Vice President Tony Villamil said. “This community is so generous, and we wanted the supplies and the funds to go back to the schools in this area.”

Lions Club members gave each school nurse various clinic needs, ranging from Ziplock plastic bags and bandages to Lysol disinfectant spray that they collected from shoppers. The Lions returned any funds so the school nurses could buy other necessities for their clinics.

During the project, club members received donations of $260. The club added to this amount and gave each school nurse a check for $100. “The club has adopted (a commitment) to help children in our local area, and this is one way we can give back,” Villamil said.

The Lions Club charter requires clubs to return 100 percent of collected project funds and donations back to the community, which separates Lions Clubs from many other organizations. “We are proud to be associated with the Madison area,” Lion Susan Parsons said. “This community is very generous and caring.”

“The school nurses were very appreciative to receive the funds and the supplies for their school sick rooms,” Lion Sam Fuller said. “The donated funds will help them get specific supplies they will need to stock their shelves.”

Madison Area Family Lions Club constantly looks for new members who want to serve their community. Club members meet monthly on second Tuesdays at 6 p.m. in Dublin Park’s meeting rooms. Lions clubs are a recognized service organization who identify needs within their community and work together to fulfill those needs.

Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service club organization, has more than 1.3 million members in approximately 48,000 clubs in 205 countries and geographical areas around the world. Since 1917, Lions clubs have aided the blind fand visually impaired and made a strong commitment to community service and serving youth throughout the world.
