Athens holds off Patriots in scorefest, JC falls on Thursday
ATHENS — The Bob Jones Patriots traveled west to lock horns with the Athens Golden Eagles in a back-and-forth classic on Friday night.
Athens (2-0) was able to hold off Bob Jones (0-2) 35-28 in a game that was full of scoring.
The Golden Eagles were led by quarterback Brogan Gross who threw four touchdowns in the victory.
The Patriots signal-caller Dylan Willingham had a pair of TD passes including a 57-yard strike down the middle of the field to running back Caleb Sanders in the second quarter.
This contest had it all offensively in the first half with the game being knotted at 7-7, then 14-14 and finally 21-21 before Athens seized control with back-to-back touchdowns to secure the eventual victory.
The Patriots had chances to climb back into the game in the second half, but two fumbles in the red zone doomed the road team.
Willingham left the game late in the fourth quarter battered with a left leg injury that had him struggling to put weight on his knee.
Thursday, August 31: Mountain Brook 18, James Clemens 13
James Clemens (1-1) came up short at home against Mountain Brook (1-1) in a low-scoring affair.
The Jets defense played hard and kept them in contention, but three interceptions by quarterback Ty Marsh proved to be costly.
One of the bright spots of the game for James Clemens was the electrifying 42-yard punt return touchdown by Ty Doughty that got the Jets on the scoreboard in the second quarter down 12-7.
Mountain Brook hit the ground running when it forced a safety on a blocked punt to go up 2-0.
The ensuing free kick from James Clemens handed the Spartans a short field that led to an 8-yard rushing touchdown by Cole Gamble for a 9-0 advantage.
