No. 7 UAH back at Charger Park for three-game GSC series Saturday and Sunday

HUNTSVILLE – The No. 7 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team opens a three-game Gulf South Conference series with West Georgia at Charger Park featuring a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at noon.

Admission to this weekend’s games – and every regular season home game – is free again this season courtesy of Alabama Credit Union.

The Chargers enter the weekend slate with a 23-4 overall record and a 10-1 mark in GSC play, following a pair of 3-2 wins at Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday. UAH’s most recent GSC action was a doubleheader sweep of Shorter last Saturday.

UAH is currently atop the GSC with a 10-1 record, with a total of five league teams already posting 10 wins in the conference schedule. The Chargers are amongst the GSC leaders in a bevy of statistical categories, ranking in the top three in batting average (.338), triples (10), walks (102), on-base percentage (.424), earned run average (2.66), batting average against (.238), and pitching strikeouts (176).

The Blue & White’s offense features a total of six lineup regulars batting .300 or higher this season, led by Lawren Hayes at .456 to rank third in the GSC entering the weekend. Kinley Adams (.443) and Jada Henderson (.423) also both rate in the top 15 in the league for batting average.

UAH’s pitching staff features two of the best pitchers in the conference so far this season, as Katie Bracken leads the GSC with a 1.21 ERA over 57.2 innings while Megan Shurtz is sixth with a 2.65 ERA over 63.1 innings. Bracken and Shurtz additionally have combined for a 16-1 record this season.

West Georgia enters the three-game set at Charger Park with a 6-23 overall record and a 2-10 mark in GSC play, following a pair of losses at Florida Southern on Wednesday. The Wolves offense is led by Madison Vandergriff with a .351 batting average and 16 RBI, while the UWG pitching staff has a 6.70 team ERA.

UAH is 76-12 all-time against West Georgia, as the Chargers won all three games against the Wolves in the 2022 season.

After this weekend’s series, the Chargers hit the road to Delta State for games next Saturday and Sunday to continue GSC action.
