Wyche earns full-tuition scholarship from Cameron Education Foundation

MADISON – The Bryan Cameron Education Foundation has announced the recipients of the Class of 2023 Cameron Impact Scholarships, and a Madison student is among the winners.

Austen Wyche at James Clemens High School is among the members of the Class of 2023 Cameron Impact Scholars. Wyche has earned a four-year, impact-based scholarship to cover full tuition and educational expenses at his college of choice.

At this time, Wyche is undecided about which university he will attend. These scholars can select any major.

The Bryan Cameron Education Foundation is a private family foundation established in 2015 to make a difference by investing in young people’s education. The foundation reviewed the maximum 3,000 applications from all 50 states and abroad for this year’s scholarships. With applications processed, officials decided on 76 finalists from 29 states.

“Every year, we are overwhelmed by the efforts of young people to make a positive difference and create solutions for an increasingly complex world,” Executive Director Amie Lucas said. “Their potential reach is really exciting.”

In accepting the scholarship, Wyche wrote the following dedication: “In honor of my family and my role model/teacher, Ms. Amy Protos, who have taught me to embrace adversity, remain passionate and lead with empathy.” Protos teaches honors precalculus and advanced-placement statistics at James Clemens.

“As I finish my final semester in high school and prepare to enroll in college, I am grateful for the foundation, my family, my peers and my role models who have helped throughout this process,” Wyche said.

“Huge thank-you to Ms. Amy Protos, Sneha Revanur, Shreya Sampath, Megan Nivens-Tannett, Maya Nicole Dummett and the countless others who have taught me the importance of embracing adversity, leading with empathy and remaining passionate in my pursuit for change,” Wyche said.

Wyche’s honors include an internship for the Alabama House Democratic Caucus, based in Montgomery. The internship included community outreach and bolstering the relationship between the legislative caucus and underrepresented communities.

In addition, Wyche participated in the Giffords Fellowship Program, which works to limit gun violence in the United States. Wyche also is a major contributor to “Teen View,” a website that allows youth to comment on social and political issues.
