MCS superintendent responds to unfounded “active shooter” threats in area school districts

MADISON – Several schools throughout North Alabama were sent scrambling Tuesday morning after calls came in reporting school shootings. According to local officials, Huntsville City Schools, Morgan County Schools and Jackson County Schools all received prank calls alerting them to an “active shooter” on their campuses.

The calls, reportedly made from an Ohio area code, claimed a shooting was currently happening in the schools.

“Based on the information we have obtained, there was no active threat in these districts,” Madison City Schools Superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols said. “This appears to be someone trying to cause alarm.”

There have not been any reports of threats to Madison City Schools in connection to this incident.

“The Madison Police Department and our SROs are aware and are prepared to respond to any emergency or incident,” Nichols added. He said if Madison schools receive any type of threat, the district will respond by placing a school in “lockdown” and following their lockdown protocol. “We will also communicate if such an activity takes place at a school in MCS.”
