Limestone County Sheriff’s Office cautioning people against scam

ATHENS — Michelle Williamson, spokeswoman for the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, said Friday that the office and federal officials are investigating a scam in which the scammer attempts to obtain funds from a victim via PayPal or other forms of wire transfer.

In the case reported, the scammer was attempting to obtain funds from a family member of an inmate, Williamson said. She said if anyone receives a document from the district court requesting funds, do not transfer any funds and contact your local law enforcement agency.

Williamson said neither the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office nor the Limestone County Circuit Court Clerk’s office would ever ask a witness to make a payment via PayPal.
