Prabhakar earns Davidson Fellows Scholarship for $10,000

MADISON – Ashwin Prabhakar of Madison has been awarded a Davidson Fellows Scholarship for $10,000.

For his award-winning project, Prabhakar studied the use of personalized implantable scaffolds for deep-wound treatment and management.

Prabhakar, 17, is a senior at Bob Jones High School. He is one of only 21 students across the country to earn status as a 2022 Davidson scholarship winner.

“To me, being a Davidson Fellow means that I am part of a passionate group focused on making impactful changes in the world using their unique backgrounds and voices,” Prabhakar said. “I am honored and humbled to be recognized for my engineering project along with these outstanding and talented individuals.”

For his project, Prabhakar developed a rapid and cost-effective method to produce personalized implants using a 3-D imaging system, model generator and scaffold printing system. The implants can monitor the wound environment for infection and deliver needed medication.

Prabhakar’s process to produce scaffolds for deep-cavity wounds can significantly reduce healthcare costs and patient treatment time, Davidson sources said.

“This year’s class of Davidson Fellows Scholarship recipients continue to find new and innovative ways to pursue their educational and research journeys while striving to solve some of the world’s most vexing problems,” Bob Davidson said. He founded the Davidson Institute.

In September, the 2022 Davidson Fellows will be honored during a reception at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and with a virtual ceremony for project presentation. (DavidsonGifted.org)

Davidson Fellows Scholarships range from $50,000, $25,000 to $10,000 to students 18 years old or younger. Recipients have completed significant projects with potential in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, literature and music. “U.S. News & World Report” named the Davidson scholarships as one of the most prestigious scholarships for undergraduates.

Founded by Bob Davidson in 1999, the Davidson Institute recognizes, nurtures and supports profoundly intelligent young people and provides opportunities to develop their talents to make a positive difference.

Prabhakar plans to study engineering and eventually develop solutions to solve real-world problems. In his free time, Prabhakar enjoys participating in Greenpower racing of student-built, single-seat electric cars.
