Michael Cole views democracy in action at Alabama Boys State

MADISON – As a delegate to the 85th convening of Alabama Boys State, Michael Cole of Madison gained a working knowledge of the functions of governments at the city, county and state levels.

American Legion sponsors Alabama Boys State. The week-long study concentrates on leadership for young men in high school who are leaders on campus and in their communities.

Cole, 17, is a senior at St. John Paul II Catholic High School.

Cole and his peers attended the conference by invitation only. School faculties and community leaders select Boys State delegates based on their demonstration of leadership, hard work, strong morals and motivation. The teenagers experienced an active week on the campus of Troy University.

His fellow delegates elected Cole to a position in the mock version of the State House of Representatives. During the week, he served as an active citizen and official while learning about the responsibilities and benefits of citizenship in Alabama and the United States.

American Legion believes that ‘a strong America’ for future generations will happen by teaching youth to understand and appreciate the basic principles involved in successfully managing a democratic society.

At Boys State, students build new friendships, participate in a mock government and hear from an array of Alabama leaders. The boys meet members of Congress, elected state officials, business professionals and civic leaders.

In other pursuits, Cole joined Boy Scouts as a first-grader in Clarksville, Tenn. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 2021 as a member of Troop 204 that meets at Madison United Methodist Church.

At John Paul II, Cole is enrolled in honors courses and participates in the school’s orchestra and marching band as a trombonist. He is a member of Golf Team and Wrestling Team. Cole also is an active volunteer at his church.

Michael’s parents are David and Melanie Cole. David is Medical Director for Huntsville Hospital’s Occupational Health Group. Melanie, a Licensed Professional Counselor, has worked as Professional School Counselor and mental health provider.
