Senior Center to try ‘Wise Eating Approaches for a Lifetime of Health’

MADISON – Members of Madison Senior Center can learn a ‘WEALTH’ of suggestions for a healthy lifestyle in a session on Jan. 12.

The WEALTH session, or “Wise Eating Approaches for a Lifetime of Health,” is a presentation by the Urban Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education or USNAP-Ed. This program is associated with Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

With the USNAP-Ed program, senior center members will hear about making nutrition easy, tasty and affordable. Participants will learn to manage food dollars, make wise food choices and prepare safe foods.

The presentation will start at 1:15 p.m. on Jan. 12.

The session will offer hands-on activities that both entertain and reinforce ideas from the lecture. The presenter will keep ideas easy to understand.

The USNAP-Ed program focuses on food nutrition and physical fitness. In the WEALTH series, participants will learn about general nutrition, healthy habits, smart shopping techniques and food safety.

Other sponsors for this session are SNAP and Alabama A&M University.

USNAP-Ed is available with the Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs unit of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Alabama A&M. The program is co-funded by the extension system and SNAP Division of Alabama Department of Human Resources.

Alabama Extension at Alabama A&M University strives to make an impact in Alabama’s urban and suburban communities. Through urban extension programs, the organization provides learning experiences to make positive changes, inspire new ideas and solve problems.

With more activities, articles and classes available online, individuals can learn with the extension system anytime from anywhere. Sign-up is easy by smartphone, laptop or tablet for free online classes on managing money, gardening, finding a job or eating healthy.

People can browse categories to discover ways to live more, learn more, plan more, grow more and save more, according to extension sources.

Madison Senior Center strives to promote independence, social, physical, mental well-being and life enjoyment to members. After closing during the COVID-19 shutdown, Madison Senior Center reopened on April 19, 2021 with limited activities and capacity, based on the guidelines and recommendations of the Alabama Department of Senior Services.
