New middle school planned for Madison now has a name

By John Peck
MADISON – The new middle school planned for Madison now has a name.
The Madison City Board of Education approved Superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols’ recommendation to name it Journey Middle School.
“Tonight, I am pleased to announce that Journey Middle School will be the name of our new middle school being built off Celtic Drive ,” Dr. Nichols said in a statement. “I am also excited to report that the mascot will be the Jaguars, which is keeping in theme with the Panthers of Discovery Middle and the Lions of Liberty Middle. Plus, Journey Jaguars just has a nice ring to it.”
Journey was a common recommendation in the 798 submissions received from an online survey launched to the community shortly after the elementary and middle schools were approved. Several other top contenders were either the same as schools in other nearby districts or simply didn’t seem to fit.
Board members agreed Journey seemed to fit well with Discovery and Liberty.
The new middle school is scheduled to open in Fall 2022 while the new Midtown Elementary is scheduled for opening in Fall 2021.
Plans for Journey Middle School call for a 170,000 square foot building with a capacity for approximately 1,200 students.
The new schools, along with other planned projects and improvements for the district, are made possible from a 12-mil property tax increase approved by voters in fall 2019. That ballot measure passed by more than a 70 percent vote margin.
