Two from Huntsville missing in Bankhead National Forest
MOULTON — Two people from Huntsville on a mountain bike trip are missing in the Bankhead National Forest, according to the Lawrence County sheriff.
Max Sanders said a man and a woman were biking in the forest on Saturday and did not return home.
On Sunday at 5:05 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a call that the pair had not been heard from since their trip.
According to a post on the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office social media page, the department conducted search operations until 2:30 a.m. Monday.
“We’ve tried to ping them on their cellphones but there’s no phone service in most of the forest,” Sanders said.
He said about 25 search and rescue workers from surrounding areas are in Bankhead looking for the missing pair. He said Sunday night’s bad weather made search operations more difficult.
He said an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency helicopter is assisting in the search.
A command center at Alabama 33 and Ridge Road just south of Moulton has been set up, Sanders said.
District Park Ranger Andy Scott could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.
