Gardeners to instruct on soap-making techniques

HUNTSVILLE – The “Soap Making 101” workshop will guide individuals through the steps involved with creating the special substance.

“Soap making is easier than ever. We don’t mix lye, or wait weeks for the process to cure,” Nareatha Studdard said. Studdard is publicist for Master Gardeners of North Alabama.

Participants can choose either the 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. session or the 2 to 4 p.m. slot for the Soap Making 101 Workshop on Nov. 21. The session will be held at Madison County Extension Office, 819 Cook Ave. in Huntsville.

Participants will learn the required materials to make soap, along with businesses or locations to order quality products for the best soap-making experience. The instructors will discuss techniques and procedures for the process.

To register, visit mginfo.org/workshops. Cost for a presentation is $5.

“Good quality soap bases are readily available now. Results are immediate,” Studdard said. “Learn how to make soap and be able to use it within hours of making it.”

Participants can package the soap for either personal use or for use as a gift for birthdays or holidays. “Create any soap you want,” Studdard said. “Come and learn at Soap Making 101.”

A demonstration at the session will include an orange essential-oil soap with goat milk and turmeric powder. Each participant will receive a guest-size soap.

Master Gardeners Doty Henry and Pam Price will present the session. Henry and Price also are active members of Huntsville Herb Society and other garden clubs.

“They enjoy educating the public and community about herbs. They use herbs, cook with them and enjoy their scents,” Studdard said. “Doty Henry and Pam Price have both participated in community educational events with other clubs in Huntsville and the surrounding areas and with school systems.”

Henry and Price share a goal to present programs to teach adults and children about the value of growing their own herbs, learning how to plant and maintain an herb garden and the proper ways of using herbs successfully.
