Exercise brain, body at Hogan Family YMCA in August
MADISON – During August, Hogan Family YMCA will offer activities that will increase fitness for the brain and body.
On Aug. 10, a course for CPR, First Aid and using an automated external defibrillator or AED will be available. Affiliated with American Red Cross, the class is open to adults (12-year-olds and older).
This course involves blended learning, and participants must complete an online portion that can require to two hours to complete. In addition, a three-hour, in-person skills test is required. This course teaches basic CPR techniques, AED usage, barrier device skills and emergency choking measures for an adult and pediatric victim.

Hogan Family YMCA will offer homeschool physical education on Monday or Wednesday during Aug. 5-28. Sessions are open to 12- 18-year-olds.
Homeschool P.E. is designed to meet youth needs by focusing on building physical fitness and enhancing skills development with age-appropriate activities, sports and games. The program utilizes the YMCA gym and pool and can help improve aerobic capacity, body composition, muscle strength, endurance and flexibility.
The class requires a minimum of four students. Class meets once weekly. Demarco Coleman will be the P.E. instructor.

Swim lessons for a parent with child are available at two different times. During August, classes for children six months to three years old will be offered on Saturdays at 11 to 11:30 a.m., along with Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 5:30 p.m.
The child will learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences. Parents will learn about water safety, drowning prevention and the importance of supervision.
“Water Discovery” or Stage A introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment. “Water Exploration” or Stage B focuses on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatics skills. All children who are not potty trained must wear swim diapers, which are available for $1 at the member services desk.

Swim lessons for pre-schoolers from three- to five-year-olds are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 to 9:30 a.m.; and Saturdays, 9:30 to 10 a.m.
For school-age children six through 12 years old, Hogan Family YMCA is conducting lessons for swim strokes on Tuesdays, Thursday from 6:15 to 7 p.m., along with Saturdays from 10:15 to 11 a.m. This age group also can enroll for swim basics on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:15 to 7 p.m., along with Saturdays from 10:15 to 11 a.m.
