John Wilson returns to Madison City Schools as transportation coordinator
MADISON – The Madison City Schools has a new transportation coordinator.
Former MCS teacher and administrator John Wilson is returning to the school district to take the transportation helm from Roosevelt Carter Jr., who is retiring.
“I have full confidence in his work ethic and ability to do a great job,” Madison City Schools Superintendent Robby Parker said.
Wilson served as a teacher and coach within the Madison City Schools system before becoming the assistant principal and athletic director at Bob Jones High School. He retired from MCS in 201after 16 years with the school system.
“It’s really great to be back,” Wilson said. It’s a homecoming and there is no place like home.”
Wilson’s daughter is a senior at James Clemens High School and his wife a third grade teacher at Mill Creek Elementary School. “Once again we are all together,” he said.
Wilson takes the wheel at a time of unprecedented growth in the student population that is putting a strain on the bus service. The department needs additional drivers as it manages new routes to accommodate new bus riders from
“This is a tremendous challenge, and a tremendous opportunity, as we continue to grow,” Wilson said.
The Madison district transports about 5,000 students daily to 11 schools. Drivers log a combined 2,033 miles each day across 134 routes and a combined annual total of 723,000 miles, including field trips and athletic events.
The MCS board also agreed last week to provide a free GPS tracking service to help parents keep tabs on bus whereabouts and arrival times. The service will take some time to get implemented but should be full operational before the end of the first semester of the upcoming school year.
