MADISON – A tragic accident Saturday involving a Madison police officer has claimed the life of an elderly woman.
Madison Police issued an alert over the weekend stating that one of its officers was involved in a two-car accident on the way to work. The wreck occurred on Wall Triana Highway and McCrary Road just north of Madison.
The collision happened just before 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
“Both our officer and the driver of the second vehicle were transported to Huntsville Hospital with injuries not considered to be life threatening. HPD is working the accident,” the alert on Twitter said.
Huntsville Police spokesman Lt. Michael Johnson said the passenger of the second was 92-year-old Phyllis Pine. She reportedly died Sunday afternoon from her injuries.
“The officer was traveling south and she was traveling north,” said Lt. Michael Johnson with the Huntsville Police Department.
Madison Police are expected to go through dash cam video from the officers car. Investigators are hoping that will help them figure out who is at fault in this accident.
Shortly after leaving the scene of the accident, an HEMSI ambulance was involved in a second wreck on Wall Triana while transporting a person to the hospital. HEMSI spokesperson Don Webster said there were no injuries in that accident.
The police officer involved in the first wreck was still in the hospital Sunday.
