Adult Recreation Programs Expand In Madison
MADISON- The City of Madison Recreation Department has released its summer and fall adult programs schedule. The department will host a variety of sports including co-ed play through most of the summer months extending into early fall.
“With Madison continuing to grow we knew we needed to add some adult programs to our activities so we’re attempting to provide as many opportunities as we can to help Madison residents to get active and have fun while doing so,” said Dylan Reutter, programmer for the Madison Recreation Department. “These sports programs allow everyone to get and remain healthy and, for some, relive their high school glory days while participating in our programs.”
The men’s basketball league will tipoff play through July 18. Each team will play six regular season games with a single elimination tournament at the conclusion of the regular season schedule. Included in the season-ending tournament will be a three-point shooting contest and a team skill shooting competition. Each team may have up to eight players, but no less than six on a team roster. Registration fee is $45 per player.
The Softball Co-Ed Summer League currently has registration in place with the season dates of July 15-Aug. 30. Teams can have up to 20 players on a roster, but no less than 11. Each team will play eight regular season contests with a single elimination after the season is complete. Registration fee is $40 per person. The recent spring co-ed season was a huge success according to Reutter.
“The players wanted to play another season as soon as possible, so we looked at our calendar of events and the schedule for Palmer Park and we made room for our first summer co-ed softball season,” added Reutter. “We’re expecting even more participation than the four teams we had in the spring league.”
A 3-on-3 Soccer Tournament will be held July 4. Teams may have four players on its rosters with the action getting underway at 1:00 p.m. Registration dates, fee and more information will be available soon.
The Fall Adult Co-Ed Volleyball League will begin play Aug. 26 and run through Oct. 24. Each team will be scheduled 12 regular season contests with a double elimination tournament to follow. Team rosters may have up to 11 players with a minimum of six. Registration is currently underway and the fee is $95 per player.
One of the hottest sports zipping through the Tennessee Valley is Pickleball and a league is currently forming with play to be held at Dublin Memorial Park. The season will be held Sept. 9-Nov. 7. Reutter said the Pickleball program began with about 20 players, which has blossomed to 100 or more. “We even had to restructure one of our tennis courts here at Dublin Memorial Park to four outdoors Pickleball courts.”
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis (ping-pong). Although first created in 1965, the sport has taken of a sort of newness in Madison the last few years.
“We will have men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles and singles in our new league,” said Reutter. “Each league will be broken down into different levels of play with action being held Monday through Thursday.”
The divisional breakdown will be similar to tennis. The lower levels of play will be ranked from 1.0 to 3.5 while the more advanced and elite players will be formatted into the 4.0-5.0 level ranking. Registration fee is just $25.
