LifeSouth emphasizes demand of blood for African-American populace
MADISON – During Black History Month, LifeSouth Community Blood Centers are emphasizing the need for a diverse blood supply.
“Maintaining a safe blood supply that is accessible to every member of our community means that those who give need to be just as diverse as the patients who receive their blood,” Eric Franchois said. Franchois works as LifeSouth’s District Community Development Coordinator for North Alabama.
During the month of February, LifeSouth wants to raise awareness about the reasons African-American blood donors are so vitally important.
“It is estimated that only one out of every 10 African-Americans who are eligible to donate blood actually do so,” Franchois said. “The majority of African-Americans have type O or type B blood, which are consistently in high demand.”
Blood type, however, is not the only factor in matching a donor with a patient in need.
“Blood also contains special markers called antigens. Some African-American patients in treatment for chronic medical conditions, such as sickle cell disease, require many blood transfusions throughout their lifetime. These patients need blood whose antigens closely match their own to reduce the risk of complications,” Franchois said.
However, these matches are found often in donors of the same ethnicity.
“The more diverse our blood supply is, the better LifeSouth can serve the needs of African-Americans in our community,” Franchois said. He encourages residents to find a local blood drive or visit one of LifeSouth’s donor centers.
Blood donors must be at least 17 years old; however, 16-year-olds can donate with parental permission and if the teenager weighs 110 pounds minimum and is in good health. Donors must present a photo ID.
LifeSouth is a non-profit community blood center serving hospitals in Florida, Georgia and Alabama.
